Foreword

As the door is screwed down and locked into place, an unmistakable solitude manifests within the chamber. It doesn’t arise from the complete cessation of ambient sound, or the inexplicable draw of your gaze toward your single lantern atop the small central desk; it comes from the unnatural sense that you and your thoughts are alone within the world, not just now but always. So shall it be for your prescribed time of six months and no amount of knocking and pleading will be noticed outside the study well. Soon, your mounting anxieties send you rummaging through your food and water stores. They seem in order. The books you requested await you near the lantern-lit desk. All seems as you planned. Everything is ideal for two seasons of uninterrupted study. Climbing onto the desk stool to get started you open the first book, and find to your satisfaction a volume that includes all entries from Si through Sy.
