City Under Stone

The City of Nazhàlað is invisible from the interior of Arynzàlvya. Without the melting suns of Summer, the roads leading to and from the coastal city give no clue to where it lay. This is because the city was built beneath a large shelf of natural stone along a craggy stretch of shoreline on the Northern Sea. The massive stone, known as Ehrzymalvadh shelters the city and its residents from much of the harsh weather brewing across the landscape above. It does not however protect against Spring storms and northern winds, which howl through its streets like tortured Neðérim. Built within the hollow space beneath Ehrzymalvadh, Nazhalyr faces the choppy white-capped waves of the Northern Sea during the Summer season, and a frozen shelf of ice for the remainder of the year.

Landmarks

  • Lighthouse. At the city’s center stands a stone column that reaches from the city wharf to the city’s ceiling (70 feet above). Though the structure looks like a natural cavern formation, it was built centuries ago and has achieved its current smooth appearance by weathering many, many seasons of icy wind. Near the top of the column is a small chamber where magical fires are kept blazing to announce the hidden city’s presence, and to warn nearing ships of the perilous coast. The fires are managed by apprentice magicians who work inside the chamber for days on end, draining their internal reserves. When their shifts end, the apprentices are relieved by another team so that they can reconnect with their Haladh and continue their studies.
