Za-Zy

Foreword

The scriveners watched with trepidation as the wagon-sized crates were dragged into the great hall; things were changing. After centuries of dust and darkness in the Iron Library, things would be different. Who would have thought old Kulhor was a revolutionary? The laborers did their work quickly, pausing only to glance at the towering bookshelves and the expansive crushing darkness that blanketed this otherworldly place. They were anxious to unpack their deliveries and be gone from this place. It did not help their state to see the dozens of thin and pale faces emerging from shadows in every direction, like apparitions of living men. This was the meeting of incongruous worlds. The first team cracked their crate open to reveal a brick of straw which collapsed into a formless heap upon the mosaic floor, a mosaic of an ancient scribe encircled by the elementary instructions on good formation of the Dekàlic script. How appropriate it was that this new contraption obscured the ancient image. With the straw swept into sacks, the scribes packed closer to examine the wood machine with its press and lever. There stood printing presses in the Great Nave; things would truly never be the same again. When the last team of laborers fled the library, ten machines stood ready. The first book to be copied was a small volume that included all entries Za through Zy.
