Anū Gyð

Overview

Yrūn have lived on the margins of the Mar Pæði for Ages. The land that is currently known as Panæð was previously ruled by a people known as the Anū Gyð. These bronze-age people were very advanced for the time but could take no credit for their achievements. Centuries earlier, the primitive Gyðyr had emerged from the Shar and conquered the indigenous people before them. Little record of these early people remain. Their achievements were also lost for a time, until the arrival of Kūgùntor, hundreds of years later. Anðùs Terrud knew nothing of the region’s history before the Panæði Campaign, only that the region was far wealthier than his archipelago kingdom and would grant him access to all the resources the continent might offer. So it was that Anū Gyð became the first land to fall beneath the Old Empire’s first expansion.

People

  • Gyðyr. Primitive dark-skinned Yrūn believed to have migrated from the Shar jungles. Even after the Enlightenment, those identified as pure Gyðyr were generally viewed as savage and war-like. This stereotype persisted well into the period of Dekàli rule, despite the rise of many Gyðyr to positions of power and class within the government, businesses, and the Temple.
  • Panæðyr. Any light-skinned Yrūn that resides in the region. Ancestry of the Panæðyr was believed to hold traces of the area’s native population. The same identifier (i.e., Panæðyr) is used today, but refers to those descendant (in some small part) from ancient Dekàli conquerors.

History

Gyðyr is the name given to a stone-age Yrūn people that overthrew and settled the area now known as Panæð. History portrays the Gyðyr as barbarians from the dark jungles of the Shar, drawn to Panæð by the land’s gold. Arriving, the Gyðyr likely found a land rich with gold, filled with inhabitants oblivious to the metal’s value beyond their own borders. After conquering the native people, the enlightenment that had graced the land was lost for many years. The arrival of Kūgùntor initiated a new Enlightenment for Anū Gyð and the introduction of the god Pæð to the barbarians. Thus did the barbarians awaken and eventually become Panæðyr. Some speculate that the previous people of Anū Gyð had been followers of Pæð as well, which if true would make the Cult one of the oldest religions of Terèðor. This early time was a turbulent one for all Terèðori Yrūn, especially those that dwelt in the unforgiving Shar. Tribes frequently appeared, moved, and disappeared into the jungles, lost to time and record.
