Ta-Ty

Foreword

It is not unheard of that a librarian or scribe, for reasons known only to himself, from time to time sets fire to the stacks of the Iron Library. Whether this is some effect of months without sunlight, the uncertainty of time’s passing, or the desperate state by which many of the scriveners find themselves bound to their carrels, is not known. What can be shown is that every few years, sometimes longer, one of the library’s inhabitants is seized with a consuming madness which culminates in them starting fires in the great aisles, an apparent attempt to destroy the great repository and kill themselves and all their colleagues with them. After the first few historical instances of this strange phenomenon, measures were taken to detect and cope with this behavior. It would appear that the wards of the place are sufficient to neutralize most conflagrations. It has been whispered however that the death toll near such events is greater than the scale of the fires might suggest. It is also told that these victims are not burned at all, but rather found in such states that might suggest that they suffocated in an open space. With the exception of the early fires alluded to above, there have been no substantial loss to the collections, unless you include the charred spine of a volume that includes all entries from Ta through Ty.
