There are four main classifications of music instruments.

Idiophones

Idiophones are instruments which produce sound by vibrating without the use of strings, membranes, or the moving of air.

Membranophones

Membranophones are instruments which produce sound by the vibration of a membrane.

Chordophones are instruments that make sound by the vibration of strings. Many of these instruments are made by luthiers.

Aerophones

Aerophones are instruments which make sound by vibrating air without strings or membranes.
