Rise of the Neðérim

Overview detailing how the Three Worlds emerged.

Prelude

In the time before Twilight, there was light. The people and creatures of the Waking World lived in harmony with the feathered denizens of the Ethereal. This time is known as the Great Concordance. It was from this period that the Bloodlings and gods emerged.

Campaign

Coming of Darkness

Not all was harmonious during the Concordance. Separatist groups eventually emerged. These are believed to have been independent-minded beings discontent with the “rule” of the Eðérim. Divided, these groups were ineffective against the Eðérim-supported status quo; united, the groups became a force that demanded the attention of their Ethereal overseers. Seeking to overthrow the Rule of the Ēlōhyr, the Discordants peered into the shadows of the universe for a force that could challenge the Eðérim. The legends explain that in the darkest recesses of the universe, the Discordants found a churning presence that they dubbed the Neðérim (i.e., anti-Eðérim). By means of incredible magics, the Discordants were able to knit the Nether to the Waking World, creating a triptych of planes. As promised, the Dark denizens swarmed outward from their world, laying waste to the Eðérim. The Discordants were dismayed however, for the Neðérim were indiscriminate, and laid waste to the Middle Lands as well. Stunned by this turn, the Eðérim sought to seal themselves off from the Twilight World, that land that existed between the light and the dark. The residents of Twilight demanded that the Eðérim honor the Rule of the Ēlōhyr, forcing them to stand with them against the dark invaders. Reluctantly, the Eðérim consented and joined the Twilight forces against the Neðérim. Together, they were able to push the Neðérim back into their own realm, for a time.

Resolution

The Chaos Storms

With the initial invasion repulsed, the Twilight World could begin rebuilding. The only problem that remained were the great Chaos storms that poured across the border between the Nether and the Mortal Realm. These storms continually transformed the landscape and changed animals and sentients into foul monsters. The Eðérim realized that unless something was done, the Chaos magics would eventually reach their own Veil (i.e., Vor Omtenéma). Seeing the terrible and swift transformations occurring within the Twilight World, the Eðérim offered a solution. They offered to create a second veil between the Mortal Realm and the Nether in exchange for breaking the Rule of the Ēlōhyr. The magics of Twilight were greatly diminished by the Discordant Rites that summoned and bound the Neðérim, so there was little choice but to agree. Once the pact was destroyed, the Eðérim constructed the Kyuràda Vor, separating the Mortal from the Devouring realm. The Eðérim however were also drained from the war with the Neðérim. To supplement their lost powers, the Eðérim scavenged power from the Vor Omtenéma to construct the second veil. Because of this, neither veil is impermeable. Holes exist and where the magics from the Concordant and Discordant Lands mix with those of Twilight, Chaos magic results. The Dwürden belief that Chaos magic is a product of the Nether is only half correct.
