Shiráddam

Overview

The lower half of the rocky Azàli Peninsula is thought by some to be the heart of all Æzàlar. The region is dominated by the thriving City of Shiráddam, which is a first stop for many Lyrasti and Vulmùri ships traveling toward the capital. In addition to this resource rich port, the province is home to the Town of Kūpan, birthplace of Irzala of Zalan. Zalanite pilgrims travel by sea and desert to visit the homeland of Irzàla.

People

The Shiráddamyr are a simple, honest people that live in the rocky reaches of northern Æzàlar. They have lived along the Azàli Peninsula since the time of the Seràjarim Empire, who referred to the westerners as barbarian. While other Empires rose and fell, the rocky shores of Shiráddam remained unchanged. The City of Shiráddam has been key to the survival of the land and its people. For centuries the independent city acted as a trading hub where the surrounding states and Empires could exchange goods without crossing enemy waters. Even during this time of plenty, the Shiráddan stayed true to their roots and culture. Businessmen during the day, the Shiráddyr would retire to simple dwellings and lifestyles in the evening.

The Azàlyr encountered little resistance from the Shiráddan, and soon made the city their capital. By this time, the City of Shiráddam had been a trading center for many centuries. By all estimations, the Shiráddan should have been incredibly wealthy. The Azàlan were frustrated again and again in their attempts to seize the imagined wealth. The Shiráddamyr insisted that there were no coin hoards or gold ingots buried beneath their homes and businesses. Homes and buildings were destroyed in the search for the Gold of the Shiráddamyr, but none was found. The Shiráddan it appeared, lived simply and without the trappings of traditional merchants. The Gold of the Shiráddamyr has never been found.

During the time of Azal, there was little intermarriage between the Azàlan and the Shiráddamyr peoples. Because of this, the native Shiráddamyr were able to maintain their cultural identity. The Azàlyr treated the natives as inferior and backward, a view that has carried forward through the centuries.
