Kantris

Kingdom of the Wall

Kantris is located on the western edge of the Mar Cèlesi. It is bordered by Garímor to the north, the Dwürden Marches to the west, and the isle of Rallàūn to the south. The kingdom’s most notable feature are the imposing Despairing Cliffs which comprise most of the kingdom’s shoreline. The coastal towns and cities of Kantris are carved elaborately from the cliffs in stark incongruity with the kingdom’s long-standing financial troubles.

During the Andùl Allyra Empire, Kantris and Tarántis were one kingdom, known as Antæ̀ris.

Landmarks

  • Despairing Cliffs. A towering natural sea wall that extends along the coast of Kantris and into southern Garímor. The cliffs were named after the numbers of Kantran kings and queens that have thrown themselves from the heights.

People

  • Kantran. The most populace group in the kingdom are the Kantran. This Yrūni group identifies with Andùl Allyra despite many centuries since the Empire’s fall. They retell many stories that vilify the Taran regardless of the fact that the two people are very similar. The Kantran are typically shorter than their Acèntyri neighbors, which is likely a result of malnutrition. The Kantran diet consists mainly of fish and goats, the only animals that thrive along the rocky coastline. While there are not many opportunities in Kantris, many workers find agricultural work in the Dwürden Marches, returning home only during the colder months.

History

Kantris was originally a colony granted to the Yrūn by King Urrümfgor of Dirün. The Bequest of Urrümfgor gave the Yrūnyr rights to the land and shores, but withheld all mineral privileges except for the coastal wall. This arrangement has been handed down through the centuries, despite the rise and fall of Yrūni governments. Many have suggested that the chronically impoverished state might enjoy untold prosperity if its people were permitted to mine the mountains that comprise its western border.

Post-Andùl Allyra

The House of Borgàrēa was both craven and corrupt. The Crown was lifted from the head of assassinated Queen Edàlða Algarāe in 1802 YW and placed upon Ūsùl Borgàrēa, a merchant and member of the Fivèndam League. The Queen had refused support for the war-effort despite the promises of other Acèntyri kingdoms and Tahrya Anahl of prosperous trading deals. Nobles and businessmen of the poor kingdom begged the Queen to reconsider, but Edàlða refused to deal with the either Tarantis or the Eylfāe. In one of the darkest moments in Kantris history, the assassins appeared in the Queen’s Court at Salvàra, undisguised and brandishing long daggers. The Queen called for her guards to protect her, but not a sword was drawn. The only person to stand in her defense was an elderly adviser named Madàn Anbàragh. The adviser was dispatched first and then the Queen. The promise of prosperous trade never manifested for Kantris. Four hundred years later, a carefully crafted union between descendants of the Queen and her chivalric defender produced a child named Madàn Algàrāe-Anbarágh. The young man was raised secretly in neighboring Garímor, and led a successful rebellion against the unscrupulous House of Borgàrēa in 2210 YW.
