Velynus Szylbra

Wizard of the Sleeping Mountains

Founder of the Academy Teréðrū at Kry Szylbra.

  • Birth: Unknown
  • Death: 633 DR
  • First Appearance: NA

A native of Iridð on the Peráram Coast, Velynus learned his magical craft from his father, Agùdyn. Not much is known about his father except that he schooled Velynus from a young child into adulthood without any exposure to the outside world. Upon the completion of Velynus’ Wizardmaking, he left his mountainside home to venture into the lands he’d only read about. His wanderings took him into the lands of Jædð where he was treated as something of an outcast by local magicians and Circles. His father it seems had taught him a very narrow line of study, giving him no insight or skill in other Forms. In later discussions, Velynus claimed that his father was a simple man who believed that everything that could be done, and should be done, involved the ground and mountains beneath them. To this end, Velynus maintained a meticulous garden until the day of his death, claiming that ushering life from the soil was the greatest of magics.

The Abandoned Keep

Call of the Hôrk

The greatest and most controversial spell designed by Velynus was Szylbra’s Whispers of the Earth. Though the details of the spell are closely guarded by the masters of his school, it is believed that Velynus was able to usher knowledge from the stones and ground itself. Somehow, news of this discovery quickly traveled to a subterranean population of Hôrk who assembled against Kry Szylbra. The Hôrk contended that the secrets of the world were not meant to be uncovered by Flesh and that if the wizard did not desist in this Weaving, they would raze the keep. After much parleying with the inscrutable Children of Stone, Velynus agreed to their demands provided the spell remain at the school. The Hôrk agreed to this, and have posted guardians near the keep ever since. Their duties (it is believed) are to protect the keep and monitor whether the spell is being Weaved again.

Works

Spells attributed to Szylbra are commonly from Kry Szylbra, a converted borderland keep in the Sleeping Mountains. Founded in the 6th century DR, the academy attracted a large number of under-privileged apprentice magicians to study the narrow path of Teréðrū magics.
