Dekàlic

Language of the Old Empire

Teréth End in Dekàlari

Teréth End in Dekàlari

The Dekàlic language is divided into three periods: Early, Middle, and Late. While there are substantial differences between the three periods, there is no clean historical division between when one period began and another ended. The evolution of language is seamless. Because most important works have been transcribed and updated over the centuries, the only period that requires attention is Late Dekàlic. It is also important to note that all language is fraught with exceptions because the rules of grammar and construction are often imposed over an existing system, that in turn is a composite of many disparate but contributing systems.

Modern speakers of Late Dekàlic each speak the language with considerable variation, depending on the region where it was learned. The differences represent changes that had begun to emerge within Dekàlic as early as the Middle Empire. The introduction of Late Dekàlic represented a concerted effort by scholars and priests of the time, to save the parent language in an increasingly growing and cosmopolitan world.

Grammar

Adjectives

Building adjectives from nouns is based on the noun’s gender. Gender for any given word is determined by its affiliation with a deity. Many words have ambiguous gender in which case both are technically correct, but the speaker/writer’s geographic region frequently determines usage. The word for autumn is anonnol (also an’nol). Autumn is a seasonal word so is commonly associated with Kændlan (fem.). In Kændal therefore, the word for “autumnal” is anónnol (also an’nol). In Ildûn, where autumn is associated with dying, the word is considered of Drāūn (neut.) and becomes anónnoldra (also an’nòldra). Some words are associated with zodiacal signs rather than deities.

Adverbs

To construct a Dekàlic adverb, modify the suffix with an –a, –da or an –nda depending on whether the adjective ends with a ch/eth, consonant, or vowel (i.e., amàreð becomes amàreða, al becomes alda, and bradra becomes bradrànda).

Superlatives

Dekàlic superlatives are formed by having the adverb preceded by: best (norder) or least (inder), e.g., norder kûdrulda, inder rogdàsda.

  • Feminine: dæm (the), dæl (a)
  • Neuter: lor (the), or (a)

Gerunds

Gerunds are nouns formed from verbs. Like most other words, gerunds require knowing the root verb’s gender. Masculine gerunds are prefixed with dor– or do-. Feminine gerunds are prefixed with ber– and be-. Neuter gerunds are prefixed with log– and lo-. Examples: dorásrus = crowning, logèryn = looking, bemèdara = mothering, loshu = poisoning. Dekàlic is very forgiving with regard to using nouns as verbs.

  • Masculine: dor– [leading vowel], do– [leading consonant]
  • Feminine: ber– [leading vowel], be– [leading consonant]
  • Neuter: lōg– [leading vowel], – [leading consonant]

Pluralization

Pluralizing nouns is also dependent on the object’s gender. In addition to gender, the plural-suffix is determined by the word’s ending (i.e. vowel or consonant). Most words in Dekàlic follow these rules, but there are always exceptions. The addition of plural-suffixes often changes the syllabic division of a word.

Definite

  • Masculine: [vowel ending] –dyn, [consonant ending] –yn
  • Feminine: [vowel ending] –dym, [consonant ending] –yd or –ym
  • Neuter: [vowel ending] –dyr, [consonant ending] –yr

Indefinite

  • Masculine: [vowel ending] –dān, [consonant ending] –ān
  • Feminine: [vowel ending] –dām, [consonant ending] –ād or –ām
  • Neuter: [vowel ending] –dār, [consonant ending] –ār

Tenses

All tense modifiers occur at the beginning of a verb. Negative forms are preceded with nûd (i.e., wural nûd yrádellar = she will not have run).

  • Simple Present: No modifier
  • Present Continuous (e.g., am, am not, are, are not): nad– [leading vowel], na– [leading consonant]
  • Simple Past (e.g., -ed, did, did not): yr– [leading vowel], yra– [leading consonant]
  • Past Continuous (e.g., was, was not, were, were not): nadyr– [leading vowel], nadyra– [leading consonant]
  • Present Perfect (e.g., has, has not, have, have not): yren– [leading vowel], yréna– [leading consonant]
  • Present Perfect Continuous (e.g., has been, has not been, have been, have not been): natyr– [leading vowel], natyra– [leading consonant]
  • Past Perfect (e.g., had, had had, had not): yrd– [leading vowel], yrda– [leading consonant]
  • Past Perfect Continuous (e.g., had been, had not been): nayr– [leading vowel], nayra– [leading consonant]
