Black Guard

Army of Oð

Ættras stood at the ship’s stern, watching his homeland dissolve into the night. Dark shapes of the motley flotilla moved steadily across the rolling waves, pushed by favorable winds and the wishes of the High Lord. At the fleet’s center drifted an enigmatic barge with three massive crates chained to its deck. He had asked about their contents, but received only a flash of polished bronze from beneath the High Lord’s lowered hood. Even when the man spoke, he shared little. Perhaps it was for the best, he considered. He was still haunted by the lifeless stare of the Regent’s aimless eyes. He dared not guess what could have befallen the Lady. He dared not think what the High Lord might have done to her. An hour from the docks and Ættras pulled a flask from his chest-pocket. “The High Lord is a mad man”, he whispered, “and he’s leading us beyond the Veil.”

The Black Guard is the name given to the Army of the High Lord of Oð.

Organization

The Oðári army is manned by regular soldiers who serve for 10 year intervals. At the end of their First Interval, they are given the option to reenlist for another 10 year interval. Though their rank may not change, Second Interval soldiers have more privileges than their First Interval colleagues. Second Interval soldiers may earn extended furloughs, are permitted to marry and support families, and may qualify for a subsistence pension at the end of their Second Interval. If a soldier’s commander does not recommend them for an officer’s rank at the end of the Second Interval, the soldier is retired. Retired soldiers frequently find gainful employment with the Merchant Guard.

Castle Guard

The Castle Guard is charged with the protection of Kryr Shùrulm and other royal holdings. The Lord Commander of the Castle Guard controls five Companies, four of which are assigned to sections of Kryr Shùrulm. Each of the four Companies is led by a Captain. The fifth (and smallest) company belongs to the Lord Commander himself and is assigned to the High Lord’s person.

The Fourth Company is known as the Company of the White Raven. This group is one of the more visible cohorts of the Black Guard. The White Raven is assigned to the front gate of Kryr Shùrulm and surrounding areas. Until 653 DR, the Company was led by Captain Saldus Greymane.
