Tymus Mesral

The Traitor of Genter

  • Birth: Unknown
  • Death: 55 DR
  • First Appearance: NA

One of the most vilified figures in Oðàri history, Tymus Mesral is most remembered for aiding the Eylfāe occupiers during the first part of the 1st century DR. What many laymen fail to remember is the support he gave to Yrūn magicians that helped them fight back against the occupying forces. In the end, Mesral was executed by the people he was trying to help, a fact that did not surface until years after his death. He is remembered by many titles including: Traitor of Genter, The Wizardkiller, and Eylf-Dog.

Betrayer

Smoke was still rising when the Acèntyri Army of the Nyr Durjin marched into the Naryard. Commanders of the three armies met at a Kreyard tavern called the Final Mooring where they received instruction from Ellyreun, Commander of the Army of the Lost Moon. The Neylfèrahl explained that the armies would leave occupying contingents in each ward of the City of Oð, and others in the surrounding countryside. The people chosen for this task would not be returning to Vulmùra, but would instead remain and ensure that the Old Empire did not rise again. Those that stayed would be granted land and privileges, more than they could have hoped for in their homeland. None of this was news to the commanders. Their armies had been carefully balanced between experience and soldiers willing to settle in the conquered lands. To help the conquerors insinuate themselves into the City, representatives were “hired” that were familiar with the politicians, merchants, guilds, and other powers that be. One of these people was Tymus Mesral, who could direct agents to the homes, businesses, and meeting places of scholars, magicians, and libraries throughout the City.

With the flawless direction of Mesral, the Occupiers were able to find libraries, secret lodges, and other meeting places for magicians and scholars of the Arcane. These people were dragged from their homes with their hands bound inside heavy iron boxes, to prevent Weaving. Thrown into the streets, the people were burned alive before the gathered crowds. Usually a representative of the Occupiers would be on hand to announce that it was the evil of these magicians that brought about the Empire’s destruction. The new leaders of the land, it was told, did not consort with the Dragul and would be able to usher in a new age of prosperity. This same scene was played out month after month, until Mesral was the one giving the speech and proselytizing the virtues of the conquering people. His face and voice were soon associated with the Occupying forces.

It is believed that Mesral had no choice but to help the Occupation, at first. At some point however, Mesral began to take an active role in the suppression of Oðic magicians and their colleagues. There were speculations that his treason would eventually lead him to betraying the security of Kyrm Oryroð, though it is unlikely that he possessed the knowledge or contacts to do so. The fear however was that over the course of the many interrogations that he oversaw, that Mesral would be able to find people that did know how to breach the Iron Temple. In 26 DR, two years before the Machine was begun, Mesral may have got closer to the Iron Temple’s secret than ever before. In the Summer of that year, a squad of Occupying forces were massacred by an Ormic Sentinel in the Pryard. The only to survive the encounter were Mesral and an Acèntyri interpreter who lost a hand during their escape. The squad had been investigating a lead near the Iron Temple which turned out to be a retired priest of Roð. When it became obvious that the questioning was getting nowhere, an Eylfāe inquisitor was brought forward to torture the old priest. At this point the floor erupted and a Sentinel emerged, slaughtering all those gathered.

Agent Provocateur

Following the appearance of the Wheel above the City of Oð, the Eylfāe grew weary of the place and moved their command centers into the Northfields and Nar Drūden. It became necessary at that point for the Eylfāe to rely on intelligence gathered by their Acèntyri allies and other agents. Mesral’s work continued to impress the Occupation, and by this time he was well-placed and trusted within their ranks. It is impossible to know if Mesral planned this route of insinuation from the start, or whether he decided to act against the Occupation due to a weary conscience. Whatever the reason, Mesral began working alongside Acèntyran and Eylfāe magicians by 30 DR, the date in the first of his journals. He began to compile copious notes detailing everything that he learned from these foreign Weavers. By 34 DR, he began disseminating his notes to old colleagues within Oð, fostering an underground movement in a city where magicians had been all but wiped out. This came to a head in 54 DR, when Dryryn Zyan returned to the city-state with Katulð. Using the Acèntyri secrets of Wizardmaking, the magicians of Oð were able to align themselves with the restored magics of the area and support the High Lord’s claim to the Iron Crown.

In the Spring of 55 DR, Mesral left his position in the Northfields to help with Wizardmaking in the City. While traveling through the Sulyard, he was identified by rebels as a traitor and an agent of the Occupation. Despite his pleadings, he was dragged into Clocktower Square where he was hanged, drawn, and quartered before being hung from the Eldran Hall. His body remained above the square for two years before it was stolen in 57 DR.
