Derékaln

Thieves Guild of Oð

The Derékaln is a wide-ranging organization with ties to all facets of the City of Oð underground. It is believed that the organization’s influence touches upon all parts of Oð, including the powerful Merchants’ Guild. The Derékaln was founded as a thieves’ guild in the 13th century HK by the renowned thief, Gerrìt Kaln. The name Derékaln (rf. Verékaln) originates from the Dekàlic meaning “Hands of Kaln”. During the intervening 700 years, the organization has set roots into nearly every financial corner of the city. Unlike the Merchants’ Guild however, infighting and a constantly shifting hierarchy have long prevented the Derékaln from wielding sustainable power within the region.

Organization

The upper framework of the Derékaln is well-defined and has remained largely intact for centuries. As one explores the deeper levels of the organization, the structure becomes asymmetric and eventually incomprehensible to all but the street-level operatives. At an intermediate level, the group is divided into neighborhood gangs. Normally, these gangs revolve around a strong leader who has the support of someone in the Derékaln hierarchy. It is uncommon for members to know the identity of anyone above their immediate leader. Gangs are organic groups that rise and fall with some regularity. Established gangs have been known to control multiple neighborhoods. Successful gang leaders must also be accomplished strategists and diplomats, for each consolidation of power inevitably threatens a higher position within the invisible hierarchy.
