Introduction
Toward the end of the Fifth Migration, the region now known as Pastar was settled by advancing Yrūn populations from the South and East. At the time, Pastar was a wide savage wilderness home to monsters and Zrū. The only pockets of civilization in the land were a series of small walled Yrūn communities which welcomed the strangers. The identity of these people is unknown, though some have suggested they were remnants of an earlier migration, possibly the Aylir Migration. Foremost among these natives, was a leader named Ūstar who had ruled the region for many generations. At the time of his death in 4/189 ER, Ūstar was believed to be over 500 years old.
During his lifetime, Ūstar was a much beloved and trusted ruler. Among other activities, Ūstar wandered the region, marking locations where the Pastàryr should build their towns and cities. He is remembered as a man of many talents. His reported abilities ranged from “feeling” locations where wells should be dug to the uniting of complete strangers in successful marriage. Most famously, he is remembered for leading an army into the Tor’n Zalkàntor to fight the Zrū menace which lived deep within those peaks. It was during this campaign that Ūstar suffered a mortal wound, which would ultimately lead him to his grave. Following the battle, Ūstar was carried to the coastal City of Castrìna where he appointed three kings to jointly rule Pastar.
Not long after Ūstar’s death, people began to venerate him as a deity. Initially, he was revered as Touched by the gods but with every re-emergence of the Ūstàri Oligarchy his stature and importance increased. In the era following the Old Empire’s fall, Ūstar had taken on a mythological significance. Before the Wasting Campaign of the 1st century DR, the Pastàrans had erected temples to Ūstar in nearly every town and city of their kingdom. The Kændàlyr tore many of these temples down ca. 88 DR, but consecrated the more grand temples to Kændlan. The Kændlàni temples were again defiled and converted in the 6th century DR during the Pastar Rebellion, an ongoing conflict now well into its second century.
