Lanàdus

Old Empire, The Kingdom of Fire and Thunder

The heart of the Old Empire, the island kingdom of Lanàdus was the source of many great changes throughout the world in the last two thousand years. What began with a barbarian king’s divination, evolved into one of the greatest Yrūni empires the world has known.

History

“The man who gave birth to the Empire was himself born here.” – from stele on northern shore

No one is sure where King Anðus I is buried. There are at least three locations on the Isle of Lanàdus that claim to be his tomb. Sometime before the rise of the House of Terrud, the sea-faring Lanátyr had been trading with ports from Nūlura to Azal. This early ability to trade and travel such large distances was unmatched in the ancient world. Whereas most seafarers traveled along coasts, the Lanátyr ships traveled using detailed star charts and a mastery of seamanship. When trading was poor, the Lanátyr would occasionally attack trading ships and remote towns before retreating to the open sea. By the 2nd century AR, the Lanátyr were widely viewed as raiders and pirates, and their merchants were unwelcome in many ports. Soon no ports would admit Lanátyr ships, forcing the island into isolation. The long distances and expense needed to reach the mainlands could not be recuperated with small raids.

In 115 AR a new king was crowned. The king, Anðùs Terrud, made the traditional journey to the Oracle of Lanas and received his now infamous half-prophecy before setting off to conquer the Known World. The Empire he and and his successors form are detailed in the History of the Dekàli Empire.

In 65 AR, Anðus’ grandson marched an army of five thousand men from Panæð to the Fertile Coast. The people of Kændal were not warlike but were numerous. The war-born Lanátyr army pushed its way north despite heavy losses. Kændal fell in the fall, ushering a massive migration of Lanátyr to the continent over the next few decades.

The Third Lanatian war proved to be the most difficult, due to the range and harsh environment of Azal. The numbers lost at sea and in the desert are difficult to estimate. Æzàlar was one of the busiest trading ports of the ancient world, so there is no wonder as to why the Lord of Lanas was willing to sacrifice so much for the campaign. The war lasted a prolonged five years, draining the coffers of Lanas, Anū Gyth, and Kændal. After the final victory over Æzàlar the Lord of Lanas returned to Tor Trèmendūm and was crowned High King of Dekàlas. His first act, at the direction of his priests, was to create the Council of Lanàdus. Among other duties, the the Council of Lanàdus was empowered to choose and crown the next High King or Queen.

Upon the High King’s death, the Council withdrew support of the Crown and installed themselves as an oligarchy. Aula, the High King’s widow, found widespread support for a Council of War. This new Council was comprised of Ðardra representatives from each of the Empire’s city-states. Āúla returned to Lanàdus in 10 HK at the head of three armies: Panæði, Æzàlari, and Kændàlan. The resulting conflict is called the High Queen’s War. After four years of fighting, Āúla marched into Kryr Trèmendūm, summoned the renegade Council, and had them executed.

Āúla then ordered a new Council of Lanàdus to be formed with specific duties, limitations, and rights; among these was a prohibition from mustering troops. This limitation did not extend to the Cults, so long as the armies were approved by their Throne. Perhaps the most important result of the High Queen’s War was the redistribution of power away from Lanàdus. From this point forward, rulers would be chosen jointly by the Council of Lanàdus and the Council of War. Furthermore, candidates could be picked from any ruler of the Empire’s city states. These changes had a dramatic impact on the future course of the Empire and determined the rules for succession for centuries. This balance would not be challenged until the admission of the Council of Ildûn, creating a third governmental branch. The last piece of business to be settled was the installation of Āúla as Queen of Lanàdus, and then her unanimous election by the Councils as the Dekàlan High Queen.
