Sebèlin grasped the ship’s rail, not because he was seasick, but because the whispers of song would not leave his head. He had been invited to the City of Mynnère and expected to see ancient trees, sacred lakes, uncommon wonders, and temples to unknown gods. Instead he had heard enchanting music, rippling from the depths of the elder forests, feasting upon the ears of the unwary, and encumbering mortal minds with generous dreaming. After days devoted to futile ambition, the Eylfāe carried the mortal to shore and placed him upon an outbound boat. Days passed before he recognized his situation, and days more overwhelmed by tears bidden from dark places that whispered “You will never behold such beauty again.”
