Weaponsmith

Military-grade weapons are not commonplace. The skill required to make a well-designed, sturdy, and balanced weapon requires many years of study at the side of a master weaponsmith. The best weaponsmiths are themselves proficient with the items they create. All of these factors conspire to inflate the cost of weapons to levels that the commonfolk cannot afford. This is no accident. Except in times of war, there are few nobles that sleep well knowing that their populace is well-armed. Weapons are made for governments and organizations who are able to pay the costs and have good reason in maintaining the status quo. The selling of weapons is another matter. Used weapons of quality sell for fractions of their unused value (1/5th to 1/4th). The reason most commonly given is that there is no reasonable way to know the history (i.e., damage and/or punishment) of a given item. Weapons of common quality can usually be sold for their value in materials (rf. Metalsmith).

Landed Ðardram with good incomes should have only modest difficulties keeping themselves well-armed and armored as is befitting someone of their rank and status. Like armor, a good weapon that is well maintained is a keepsake that will likely be handed down from generation to generation.

In addition to the Yrūn weapons described below, there are also weapons specific to other races:

Blackpowder

The secrets of the Firemakers are closely guarded to this day (rf. Order of Iron Death). No kingdom is currently manufacturing black powder weapons, though many have efforts underway to discover the secrets of blackpowder. The use of gunpowder among the Dekàlans was still quite primitive when the Empire fell. At that time, some capitals had constructed cannon emplacements to protect their harbors. Some Infantry weapons had also been manufactured and distributed through the city-states of Oð,Taldàna, and Kændal. Some of these weapons still exist, but most stores of blackpowder have been lost (i.e., detonated, stolen) or have become unstable.

Old Empire matchlocks were of the serpentine variety
1 Hand grenades were not used much before the Empire’s fall and since are only mentioned briefly in war annals. When loaded, the bombs were heavy and required careful powdering (20 Ready manuevers), capping (5 Ready Maneuvers), wicking (5 Ready maneuvers), and lighting (1 Ready Maneuver with a lighting fuse).
