Ya-Yu

Foreword

“One cadaver for another”, whispered a scribe. Such irreverent jests were met with laughter in the rear rows. At the front of the wide assemblage, the latest Head Librarian was presented the sash and scepter of his predecessor. Climbing the higher stage with the assistance of younger men, the elder shuffled slowly toward the podium. It was on his insistence that he make the journey across the stage without the aid of his cane. And so, with every step the audience cringed, expecting to hear the snap of brittle hips and knees. It would not be the first time that a Master did not survive his own Elevation. A single but wide exhalation of relief escaped the crowd as Kulhor reached the podium. He fumbled with the papers awaiting him there, and began his acceptance speech. “One cadaver for another”, the octogenarian began, bringing stunned silence to all assembled. “Those are the words we spoke upon the Elevation of Hursus, in 580 DR. The humor was old then, it is older now. I stand before you all to commend and command each of you in the great work of this place. To those who do not understand, this place is a worldly Nether, a place where no sun may ever shine, where the toils of men are hidden in shadow. Yet, without this place there would be no kingdom. This is the fortress of Uren-kind which no Eylfāe nor enemy may ever sunder. Within these iron walls, lie the lore of your fathers, given down to you so that your children might one day rise against the forces rallied around us, and claim this world as our own. Roð foresaw the need to build this refuge, and we the faithful did his bidding, and all Yrūn are eternally thankful. Our duties are not done for we must always be prepared and readied for the next Age, when all good men may call on us again. It may not be tomorrow, or the year thereafter, but know that there are stirrings and movements above, and for this reason we must be vigilant.” Wracked by coughing, Kulhor withdrew from his podium, and shuffled off into the waiting arms of his assistants. The hundreds that gathered murmured at length among themselves at the meaning of his words and wondered what they could mean. These were not the standard platitudes of someone accepting a titular position. Some guessed that dark things were afoot; others suggested that the old man suffered paranoid delusions from another Age, and at least one wondered how with all these interruptions, he would ever finish copying a volume that includes all entries Ya through Yu.
