Foreword
The book is a wonder to behold. The goat leather hide was carried from high in the Tor’n Evalshat shortly following the end of the Occupation; two of the expedition hunters were killed on the return trip when their camp was overrun by an Ortor scouting party. Gems once adorned the cover, but have since been pried from their silver mounts by thieves; the stones had been mined locally by the Dwürden Fal who traded them to Kyrm Oryroð in exchange for Ormi tools. The calfskin parchment pages were prepared in a monastery near Terazya where they were blessed and finally presented to the Temple as part of their annual obligations. Lastly, the bound pages were scribed and illuminated by the scrivener Læskafa in the Hand of Julus II. All of this was done to create this commemorative Book of Roð marking the ascension of the High Priest Tolurus I in 92 DR. Not nearly so much effort was expended to compile a volume that includes all entries from Eg through Ez.

Before this time, people were permitted to own and trade eárad, which were slaves with no contract for freedom. After the High King outlawed this practice throughout the Empire, every Yrūn slave was granted a contract which if followed would earn the slave its freedom when the contract expired. The creation of contracts followed detailed and often arcane guidelines so that a slave had a chance to meet its criteria in time. These contracts only applied to Yrūn slaves. Owners of Yrūn war captives were sometimes given exception to this law, with the understanding that children of these captives would be given contracts. This practice employed many litigants in each city-state.
