Apothecary

The Apothecary serves many functions throughout the Old Empire. At his shop, the Apothecarist prepares and sells extracts, herbs, oils, ointments, poultices, tablets, teas, and tinctures for those able to browse his wares. For those unable to reach the apothecary, the Apothecarist visits the sick and prescribes medicine and care. In addition to doctoral duties, the Apothecarist may also serve as an Arcanist in communities that cannot support specialists.

Herbs

The price of drugs and herbs are determined by several factors. Is the the plant limited to a small location? Is the plant hard to find in its region? Is the plant hard to keep fresh once harvested? Is there any danger involved in harvesting the plant? What is the demand for the herb? Can the plant only be harvested during particular seasons? Herb costs can be determined by the following formula:

[Loc (Limited Location) % x0.1] +
[HtF (Hard-to-Find/Scarcity) % x0.1] +
[HtH (Hard-to-Harvest/) % x0.2] +
[Per (Perishable) % x0.2] +
[DnH (Dangerous Handling/Illicit) % x0.2] +
[Dem (Demand) % x0.1] +
[Sea (Seasons Dormant) #] =
Cost in Audàrār

If a person is trying to purchase an herb outside of one of its natural locations the cost should be increased by 50% for every region removed from the original. All seas count should be counted as one region. As an example, Adyrabyna might cost 18d in the Fertile Coast but 27d in the Highlands. Herbs are usually not available more than two regions away.

Prices do not include the cost of containers (rf. Glassmaker, Potter).

Drugs

Somewhere along the eternal seach for food, medicine, and entertainment, plants and other substances have been found to serve as drugs. The world of herbalism is an esoteric one, spent walking hunched through the undergrowth examining leaf serrations or analyzing spore prints left on vellum tags. Another side exists beyond this drudgery, a side that is lucrative, rewarding, and in high demand in almost every culture across the face of Teréth End.

It is customary to measure drugs by the single ounce rather than two. In areas where the drug(s) is illegal, multiply the price x2.0-3.0.

Dried herb to smoke ratios: 1/4 oz = 14 smokes, 1/2 oz = 28 smokes, 1 oz = 56 smokes. Two smokes = one bowl/pipe.
Liquid drugs are given by the 1/2 teaspoon: 4 teaspoons = 1 oz
