Warrens of the Wretched

Overview

Warrens of the Wretched

Warrens of the Wretched

A. The Pillared Entrance. Buried in the hillside vines is a small stone building with a columned porch. There is a heavy metal-banded iron door with large studs hanging slightly ajar. With the exception of the leeward winds outside, it is dark and quiet inside.

B. The Barrier. A well-built stone room at the bottom of a long staircase. The center of the room is piled with timbers, pieces of broken furniture, old barrels, etc. It looks like someone made a barrier to keep someone in or out of this place. The barrier has long since collapsed making it hard to determine which side built the makeshift wall.

C. The Chamber of the Well. At the bottom of another long staircase is another stone-set chamber. This large circular stone chamber has a ledge that encircles a wide pit. The pit puts forth an eerie green glow from the thick mists that curl below its lip. Surrounding the pit along the walkway are seven alcoves containing statuary. All but one of the statues remain standing.

The statues appear to be Yrūn figures dressed in old drapery-styled robes and tunics. Some of the figures are holding staves, while others hold books and scrolls, each with one outstretched hand. These are the ancestors of the Wretched, who came to Dun Ngur in ages past by pilgrimmage to hear the great Oberyl. The Wretched refer to the statues as the Fathers, but don’t know anything about them except the names inscribed in their bases. The seven are worshipped as ancestral gods. If someone places their head under a hand the statue speaks (see below) and grants a power; only one power may be granted to one person, a day. The effects last one day. Each palm has a different symbol which randomize after every full usage. Though the symbols are consistent with the powers / curses.

  1. Bearded Man with Scroll (Zirmāir) – “Cursed are thee” (Blindness, Fortitude DC 20)
  2. Man with Staff (Noram) – “Blessed are thee” (Empathy, soothe beast, Will DC 15 for beast, + Cha mod)
  3. Woman with Spear (Layùra) – “Blessed are thee” (Rage, as Barbarian, x2 today)
  4. Woman with Staff (Dolmāira) – Tipped-over statue reveals a small cave entrance in the alcove behind. Face of statue is crushed and in rubble around head on floor. The hand and arm are broken.
  5. Bearded Man with Staff (Gerídin) – “Cursed are thee” (Bleeding, Fortitude DC 20, all wounds act as wounding, subdual damage continues to bruise, etc.)
  6. Old Woman with Bird in Hand (Bālìrya) – “Blessed are thee” (Flight 10 ft., Reflex DC 10 per maneuver or scatter for full movement, 1d3 subdual damage if solid object is hit)
  7. Man with Book (Salmìras) – “Blessed are thee” (Movement +10 ft.)

At the bottom of the Well lives the Slave, a 100 ft. drop for those so-inclined. The Slave is angered. The Empathy (see C2) ability must be used to quell is fury. The Slave appears as a giant translucent creature with a glistening starry hide. The monster is –/+1. The Slave will befriend any who release it, after which it will rampage through the warrens leaving bloody carcasses behind. When it has slaked its thirst and revenge, it will return to the Empath (whether they still have the power or not) and sit, waiting for instruction. The monster is large and strong, and other than being immune to all but +1 and ghost-touched weapons, can fall any distance.

  1. Alarm and Warning
  2. Izzin’s Fane. Elaborate woven wooden shields hang along the wall. Each is a symbol of a different ancestor. At the room’s far end is a stacked stone podium with an open book atop it.
