The Great Captain

Ringed by light and fire, the Great Captain steered the ancient ship into the ground. Upon the surrounding isles and mountainsides the Fallen stood and stared as the masts clawed deep furrows into the ice. The ship’s blue timbers shuddered and strained, fire erupting from its incandescent heart. The snapping of a rudder sent the ship tumbling, keel over deck. The Great Captain remained at his desperate post, bone white hands fighting against the tillers, driving the calamity as far from the Fallen as possible. As the deck crashed down and the masts snapped one-by-one, the timbers split asunder and the imprisoned heart consumed all with its fire. Banks of steam rolled across the landscape, returning primeval ice to sea. A dreadful thunderous knell followed, a sound that still rings in the ears of all Eylfāe. The Great Captain was not the first of Fallen to die upon this world, but his is the only name remembered by their Song.

Introduction

Alvyrashàllyhā is the only Fallen individual known by name. All that is known about the Great Captain is derived from the Song of the Fallen. It is not clear where he came from or his experience at captainship. He is believed to have helmed a four ruddered ship, evident from the four-tiller symbol attributed to him. The Song of the Fallen describes how Alvyrashàllyhā steered the doomed ship close to land so that his passengers and crew could leap from its decks. Mention that he was not the first of the Fallen to die, indicates that either some of the Fallen leapt to their deaths or that other ships met similar fates.

The Great Captain is important to the Eylfāe for a number of reasons, not the least of which is a racial nostalgia for all things pre-Teréth End. He is most esteemed for his selfless sacrifice to save his passengers, which is broadened to include all Eylfāe. Martyrs among the Eylfāe are held in high-regard, because their sacrifice comes at the cost of Immortality. Many Aqōlàhqbāe believe that they are descended from those Fallen that fell into the seas; though logic would then suggest that were passengers of different ships.

Locations of sunken Eylfāri ships are sacred to the Cult of Alvyrashàllyhā. This becomes problematic in enemy waters, where conclaves of Aqōlàhqbāe sometimes congregate. Unsuspecting Mortals that travel too close to these congregations often meet bloody demises.
