Foreword

Lardis prayed as he sat at the bottom of the stairs. He prayed for the strength to persevere. The map that he carried said that he was close. He prayed that he would not disappoint Old Ðurh’s ghost; his master was now long dead like everyone else he had known. Opening his lantern he cast a dim light into the dark chamber. Even here, in the lowest basement he had found, the walls were lined with shelves stacked with dusty books and scrolls. He marked the map with a charcoal stick and knew that he was done. He had followed Old Ðurh’s maps to every corner of the great library and it had only taken a lifetime to complete. Ecstatic, the old man yelled and laughed, stopping only to hear his echoes winding their way up endless stairs and hallways, which he alone knew were not endless at all. Giddily he pranced about the dusty chamber, his youth swelling in his chest. As he danced, poor Lardis tripped and stumbled headfirst into a cabinet. Falling, he reached for an unsteady shelf and upset an avalanche of weighty books on top of him. Inhumed, Lardis’ could draw no breath and speak no words as the cairn of books compressed his chest until he died to the sound of twenty bones snapping. At the top of this pile lay a volume that included all entries from Ma through My.

  • Malaz (MAH lahz); Unkn. Ancient sea deity worshipped by the pre-Empire islanders of Lanàdus. Many aspects of the deity are incorporated into Irāyn. The people of the ancient Lanàdus believed that the sun rose from the waves and descended into the same. Ancient temples to Malaz are found throughout the islands, the most famous of which is a submerged temple city in the shadow of Tor Trèmendūm.
  • Malazra, Lady (mah LAHZ rah); OOð./Trade. Denizen and ruler of a small area of Oð’s Lower Streets. Imprisoned in the Butterfly Vault by Dammon Shroudson and Jak the Red.
  • Malda (MAYL dah); OOð. Renowned lapidarist of Oð’s Kyard, that Tressta commissioned to fashion her a perfect quartz crystal.
  • Maldard, Sir (MAYL dahrd); Oð. An Oðic Ðard of legend who battled the “storm-snatcher” of Erhet.

  • Mamra (MAHM rah); 1. Oð. The largest moon of Teréth End; The green moon; Agammaram
  • Manda, Taala (TA-ah lah MAYN dah); OOð. A large and severe woman that owns a four story boarding house in the heart of Oð’s Kreyard. A competent cook, Taala slaves endlessly over an eternal meaty stew. The ingredients of her stew were a highly guarded secret though local children tell tales of kids that had wandered into Taala’s alley and never returned. Taala was Malyn’s landlady for some time.

    A sea-born child who is ritually blinded to form a bond to the sea. Mar eárad supposedly could lead ships unerringly through foul weather and treacherous waters. Such unfreeable Yrūn slaves were made illegal in the Middle Empire.

  • Marenzon, Citalla (kih TAHL lah MAHR ehn zohn); OOð. Swordswoman that recognized Mishara Mythdaras at the Temple Gate on 3 Lanal 652 DR.
  • Margin, The; Trade. A shadowed area along the southside of Oð‘s city wall. The area is usually vacant in the twilight and dark hours as it becomes a hunting ground for the Craw.
  • Marjord, Gurl (guhrl MAHR johrd); Dek. (899-937 HK) Famous Roðite clockmaker whose fingers were cut off following the creation of his masterpiece in Panæð. Following his dismemberment, Marjord threw himself from a river bridge and drowned.
  • Mar’yeel (MAYR yel); Sol. Sōlàhrāe that was found in the Elder Wood.
  • Masnur (MAYS nuhr); OOð. ( -652 DR) Doloran peasant killed in the Cenotaph cemetery tunnels.
  • Master, The; Trade. Unknown person associated with the Crown of Oð in the 7th century DR.
  • Mawn, Irid (IHR ihd MAHWN); OOð. Jaris rat-catcher who works for local oldums; local barhound of the Red Cock. Irid is a lady’s man about Jaris who has fathered over twenty children by twelve or more women.

  • Meder, Jacant (JAH kahnt MEY dehr); OOð. ( -638 DR) During the winter of 638 DR, many in Oð went hungry when a black mold was found in many grain stores of the Naryard. A peasant named Jacant who worked at the Perul granaries was found wandering among the stores late one night under Mamra’s full disc and charged with sorcery. When dragged to the Hanging Tree his ripped clothing revealed a strange red tattoo of an eye upon his chest. His cairn still lies at the foot of the tree.

  • Meol the Third of Taldàna, High Priestess (ME ohl); OTal. ( -643 DR) Predecessor to High Priestess Elésea IX of Taldàna. Meol was a great patron of symphony music and spent vast sums refurbishing ancient music halls in Taldàna, Shalvàsal, and Wyme’er. During her reign several pieces were written in her honor.
  • Merant (MEHR ahnt); OOð. ( -112 DR) Roðite ethicist who is credited as the father of the Puritan Calling within Oð. Merant produced numerous leaflets aimed at the general population, espousing the values of hard-work and spartan living. He orated throughout the region on the Virtues of Roð, and many of his teachings are studied today. Like Hardrok before him, Merant answered the need for a moral compass within the corrupt post-Dekàlan society.
  • Merchant Guard; Trade. The law enforcement branch of the Merchants’ Guild. The soldiery are not permitted to wear anything more than leather armor within the City of Oð, though officers often wear studded leather. Rank within the Guard is depicted by the metal badge (or coin) sewn into the chest of one’s armor. Copper, silver, gold are used, while the highest ranking officers wear carved precious stones in place of a metal decoration. There are ranks within each metal designation. Although the Guard has no “legal” power to enforce laws, the crown’s recent ambivalence has empowered the Merchant Guard. The Merchant Guard do “permit” non-Guards and Lord’s Men to wear armor in protected areas of the City of Oð. Weapons are frowned upon but rarely disallowed. Visible weapons within the City are uncommon as they attract unwanted attention. The Merchant Guard are paid per arrest, making commissions on all fines extracted by Merchant Guild magistrates.
  • Merchants’ Guild; Trade. A consortium of business owners and traffickers that dictate, manage, and enforce many aspects of life within the City of Oð. The Merchants’ Guild’s most visible presence is the Merchant Guard; whose favor and protection is available to all for a price.

    A standing Ummòni army formed circa 90 HK that fought in the Second Ildûni War and later marched on Oð in 415; the army was disbanded in 432; surviving Ðardram created the elite Ordus Fer Merdrul; an award granted by the High Priests of Īrul.

  • Minions of Danok (DAY nohk, DAYN ohk); Oð. Cult devoted to the worship of the mysterious Danok. Cult members wear bright red robes and keep their heads shaved. The activities and agendas of the cult are shrouded in secrecy though the priests are visible throughout the City of Oð. (rf. Red Temple)

  • Mistvale; Trade. A small town nestled at the foot of the Tor’n Evalshat, far to the west of the Elder Wood.

  • Mourners’ Guild; Trade. An organization with the City of Oð that provides service and ceremony for the deceased. Other than wailing and death-vigils, the guild also manages collection, embalming, preserving, religious preparation, excavation, interment, and maintains massive archives that detail where most of Oð’s dead have been buried.
